London explosion shows importance of cylinder safety |

Why is the safe storage and handling of gas cylinder important? A firm in London became the perfect example of the danger that cylinders can pose when it had to evacuate 2,000 staff members from their offices last Tuesday (5/26). The St. Albans & Harpenden Review reports that acetylene and oxygen cylinders, in use, burst into flames at the Fleming Fabrications factory in London at 12:30 pm.
The staff was forced to move outside of a 200 meter perimeter of the factory and could not return to work until about 4 pm.
The fact that work stopped for almost four hours is only a small part of the problem. The danger that workers could have been injured or killed makes gas cylinder safety a serious concern for anyone responsible for maintaining safety in the workplace.
